Thomas Högberg

Vice President, Chemistry & ADME


Thomas Högberg was previously employed at Astra from 1971 to 2000 and has been engaged in drug development from early discovery up to marketed products within metabolic disorders, CNS and respiratory/ inflammatory diseases. He held various positions, including Director of Medicinal Chemistry at Astra Research Centre, Södertälje.

 

In 1991 he moved from the Stockholm area to Astra Draco in Lund to establish and head the Department of Medicinal Chemistry – a position he held for six years. Subsequently he was in charge of pre-clinical project management, patents and toxicology at Astra Draco. In 1998 he led a global Astra team that developed a new research process strategy, encompassing target validation, HTS, structure- and combichem-based drug discovery and led a task force for the merged AstraZeneca that developed a comparable common strategy. For a year he worked at ALK-Abelló with responsibility for implementing and running their project and portfolio management process.

 
Thomas Högberg has been engaged in the Board of Medicinal Chemistry in the Swedish Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of "Current Medicinal Chemistry" and “Medicinal Chemistry”. He has published over 90 scientific papers, a large part on GPCR-related medicinal chemistry. Thomas Högberg holds an MScChE from the Lund Institute of Technology, a PhD in organic chemistry from University of Uppsala and is Assoc. Prof. at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.
